Ibogaine vs. Traditional Rehab Facilities

Ibogaine vs. Traditional Rehab FacilitiesChoosing the right addiction treatment is one of the hardest decisions you can make. Just as there are many different types of addictions, there are many different types of treatment options. What works for one person might not always work for the next. For many people, traditional treatment options such as the 12-Steps and inpatient rehab facilities are options they have tried time and time again with the same results–failure.

Fortunately, traditional rehab facilities aren’t the only option when it comes to addiction treatment. And with more options, there is more possibility for everyone to get the treatment they so desperately need. One such alternative to traditional treatments is Ibogaine—and this alternative has helped thousands of people find freedom from their addictions. Ibogaine works and it works well. It just so happens to be worlds away from what one would think of as a “traditional” rehab facility.

For one, Ibogaine isn’t legal in the US. That means treatment with Ibogaine won’t be local, with most people from the US who take it traveling to Canada, or Central and South America to attain it. For another, treatment at an Ibogaine facility is a shorter process, but much more intense.

The “Traditional” Rehab Experience

Traditional addiction treatment most often begins with detox. This is the very first step of almost any addiction rehabilitation facility and gives the addict time to come down off of the physical aspects of addiction. Detox withdrawal can be different for everyone depending on how far they are into their addiction and just how much of a substance they were using. Detox is done either at the rehab facility or at a detox center.

Once an addict has gone through detox they make the transition to a rehab center where they continue on with their treatment. Most traditional rehab facilities are inpatient, which means the patients stays at the treatment center until they are finished with treatment.

Traditional treatment facilities focus mostly on the psychological aspects that entail an individual’s addiction. It is during their time in the facility that they will often attend traditional programs aimed at addiction such as the 12-Steps. Residency at a traditional addiction facility can last anywhere from 30 days up to an entire year or more.

The Ibogaine Experience

Treatment for addiction at an Ibogaine facility is a much different experience than one would find at a traditional facility. For one, the physical addiction treatment with Ibogaine only lasts a few days, so patients aren’t required to spend months and months away to get better. Treatment at an Ibogaine facility generally lasts around 7 days.

Like detox at a traditional facility, it is also the first thing someone will experience with Ibogaine treatment. Ibogaine has been shown to be extremely effective at helping with even the worst cases of physical dependency (think extreme heroin addiction) and does so within the first 8 hours after it is administered.

While being closely monitored, patients experience a complete reversal of the physical aspects of their addiction within the first few hours of treatment. Ibogaine works to reset the brain’s chemistry back to its pre-addicted state by flooding the parts of the brain associated with feeing good (serotonin and dopamine receptors) that have been damaged due to excessive drug use.

After this first phase, patients remain under the influence of Ibogaine for the next 24-36 hours. Here they are closely observed by trained medical professionals as they go on an inner journey that helps them to process past memories and traumas that have led to their current addicted state of mind.

It’s been said that an experience at an Ibogaine treatment center can be likened to hundreds of hours of therapy in just a couple of days. This can be compared to the weeks addicts often spend in traditional treatment centers, working on the psychological aspects of their addiction. With Ibogaine, the psychological facets of one’s addiction are looked at from an entirely different perspective and can be resolved much quicker than traditional treatment alone.

The Importance of Aftercare

One thing that both Ibogaine and traditional treatments have in common is the utterly important aspect of receiving aftercare. While any treatment center can do its job by helping someone end their addiction, keeping away from the addiction is an entirely different story all together.

The importance of aftercare, no matter what kind of treatment one received cannot be emphasized enough. In traditional treatment facilities things like regular AA or other 12-Step meetings are often introduced. While Ibogaine clinics don’t usually offer aftercare treatment (as many treatment centers are in another country) they usually offer a plan for aftercare that patients can adhere to as they transition back to a normal life.

Ultimately, it is up to the individual who’s addicted to decide what kind of treatment facility would work the best for them. Ibogaine has shown to work when traditional treatment centers don’t and can be a welcoming alternative to those who haven’t found lasting success with other options.
